English

At Holgate Meadows, we believe that the ability to read, write, speak and listen is key to accessing greater opportunities throughout life. Functional literacy enables students to succeed in all areas of the school curriculum, often improving self-esteem and attitudes towards learning.

It is our aim that students access inspiring, relevant and accessible programmes of study that enthuse and promote success.

With this in mind, we have provided a sample of the texts that students will read in lessons.

  • Of Mice and Men – John Steinbeck
  • Macbeth – William Shakespeare
  • A Kestral for a Knave – Barry Hines

  • 1st World War Poetry – Wilfred Owen
  • Pre-1914 Poetry, The Highway Man – Alfred Noyes

All students follow a programme of study which is informed by the National Curriculum and exam board syllabi. In addition to studying a wide range of age-appropriate texts, their curriculum is supplemented by learning a variety of literacy skills that are personalised according to their ability and need.

As well as studying high quality, challenging texts, we aim to enrich learning by offering off-site visits and multi-media experiences. In recent years, we have offered theatre trips to see plays like: Romeo and Juliet, Blood Brothers and The Woman in Black.

It is our plan that all students who are able, will achieve an OCR Qualification in English Functional Skills, Entry Level, Level 3 by the end of Y9.

At KS4 (from September 2015) students will study towards the AQA GCSE English Language Qualification, or the OCR Functional Skills Qualification at Level 1.
