XL Club – PDE Qualification (Personal development and employability skills)

The Qualification:

The Prince's Trust Award and Certificate in Personal Development and Employability Skills (PDE) recognises a breadth of personal skills, qualities and attitudes required by employers across a range of sectors. 

The qualifications have been developed with the aim of progressing learners into further education and/or employment and are available for use with pre and post 16 learners:

They give learners the opportunity to:

  • Develop their own personal growth and engagement in, and through, learning
  • Engage in learning that is relevant to them and support their development of personal skills and attributes that are essential for working life and employment
  • Prepare themselves for progression into further education programmes,  apprenticeships or other work-based learning
  • Develop their literacy, language and numeracy skills

The qualifications are regulated qualifications on the Register of Regulated Qualifications (RITs):

Pupils can choose from the following units:

Career Planning Community Project Customer Service
Interpersonal & Self Management Skills Managing My Money Participating in Sport
Personal Project Planning for Personal Development Practising Leadership Skills with Others
Preparing for a Healthy Active Lifestyle Presentation Skills Supporting Others in the Community
Teamwork Undertaking an Entreprise Project Work Experience

The Awards:

Prince's Trust Entry 3 Certificate in Personal Development and Employability Skills (600/8034/6)

Prince's Trust Level 1 Certificate in Personal Development and Employability Skills (600/7958/7)

Prince's Trust Entry 3 Award in Personal Development and Employability Skills (600/6952/1)

Prince's Trust Level 1 Award in Personal Development and Employability Skills (600/8032/2)


Pupils are assessed through coursework in year 10 and 11. Pupils have the opportunity to study for the entry 3 award (6 credits) and certificate (6 credits) or the level 1 award (6 credits) and certificate (21 credits).

  • Improve behaviour, both in and beyond the classroom

  • Make a positive contribution to the Community


  • Difficulties with Maths and English
  • Underachievement in class
  • Distracting, disruptive or aggressive behaviour
  • Alienation, isolation or bullying
  • A lack of parental support
  • A record of truancy or absenteeism
  • Young people at Serious risk of exclusion

National Results

Results (compiled from all the young people taking part in the Prince's Trust scheme nationally) can be seen in young people's attendance, attitude and attainment: 

  • 88 per cent of those that complete the programme progress into full time education, training or employment
  • 94 per cent of young people would recommend it to others
  • 89 per cent of young people show personal development
  • 90 per cent of young people show positive skills development across a range of areas
